Local 135 Meets with Chief Mire
Yesterday, after the official pinning ceremony for Fire Chief Michael Mire, Chief Mire met with the Local 135 Executive Board at the Union Hall for a three-hour meeting.
We had a very productive and informative discussion covering many of the important issues facing the Wichita Fire Department. Chief Mire was open and transparent throughout the meeting, and we were encouraged by his willingness to listen to the thoughts, concerns, and potential solutions brought forward by the Executive Board.
Among the topics discussed were staffing, firefighter health and wellness, cancer prevention, response protocols, vacation and Kelly Day policies, EMS training and response, and several other issues that directly impact our members and the citizens we serve.
While there is certainly a great deal of work ahead, we left the meeting encouraged by Chief Mire's leadership, his willingness to engage, and his commitment to hearing from the men and women on the front lines.
Local 135 looks forward to continuing this dialogue through regular meetings and open communication. We believe that working together, identifying problems, and developing solutions will help move the Wichita Fire Department forward in a productive and positive manner.
We look forward to the work ahead.
